Local Flavours, Familiar Faces!

BC Association of Farmers' Markets

Farmers' markets operate in every type of community across British Columbia from cities and suburbs to rural communities. Markets vary in size and sophistication, from large sheltered public markets to a few farmers with their trucks parked next to each other in a parking lot or farm field. Now that's fresh!

Sun Peaks Resort

A small, yet bustling market in its third year, Sun Peaks Farmers' Market pulled out all the stops when it produced a BC Day Feastival: The Farmers' Market Olympics. Encouraging people to buy into the concept of supporting local farmers and farmers' markets, this food-focused event blended Sun Peaks' sports culture with seasonal fare by enticing guests and market customers to partake in various challenges. Corn husking and corn eating contests, a scare crow making contest, Chef in the market and Olympic Gold Medalist and Sun Peaks' Director of Skiing Nancy Greene Raine as MC, ensured guests were in their element with food, fun, sun and the great outdoors!

Highlight on the Clearwater Farmers' Market Strawberry Feastival

150 cake

The entire Feastival theme centered around strawberries as Clearwater was once a major producer of this luscious fruit. A tasty start to the morning was the pancake breakfast sponsored by the neighbouring Elks. The first 100 lucky market goers were handed free strawberry runners and a piece of delicious BC150 strawberry cake. Followed by a strawberry baking contest, a strawberry shaped piņata for kids, strawberry eating contest (no hands!) and an afternoon chocolate & strawberry tea that featured readings by local authors and was sponsored by Clearwater's local Ski club, customers and vendors alike were in berry heaven. This was a first for the market and it was such a success that they are now enthusiastically planning their 2nd annual Strawberry Feastival in 2009!

Highlight on the Errington Farmers' Market Corn Feastival

corn on the cob

A beautiful forest setting and brand new bandstand set the stage for this Feastival featured around corn. Old time fiddlers played, kids participated in zucchini races and locals and new customers visited and shopped. Vendors proudly wearing BC150/BCAFM market aprons served the eager shoppers while the market manager's husband, Guy, served 240 + cobs of grilled corn donated by nearby Fox's Farm. Regular customers knew to bring coffee cups as this market is famous for their fresh coffee and home made cinnamon buns. For those who weren't in the know, Errington Farmers' Market produced glass coffee mugs with the BC150 logo beautifully laser engraved to give away. New customers, vendors and market awareness resulted by participating in the BC150 Feastival program and market manager Susanne Vigneault is excited to keep up the momentum next market season!
